Fox Squirrel (Sciurus Niger)
Sometimes referred to as Eastern Fox Squirrel. This is an introduced species not native to California. The squirrels in California lack the extensive black that is present in the other color phases. They live in any kind of forest, nut groves and often around buildings.
The squirrels in this picture were found when they fell out of a nest that was made under roof tiles. Photo taken 08/06/00.
Things aren't always what they seem in nature. The largest
male squirrel that seemed to be doing so well did not survive.
The other male and the tiny female survived.
Photo taken 08/26/00.
These squirrels were successfully released on October 14.
