Raccoon (Procyon lotor)
Can live in various habitats but most common along wooded streams. Often it lives in the suburbs feeding on garbage and pet food. First people give them handouts and then they call them pests. Never leave uncovered pet food or other scraps where raccoons can find it and make your yard their personal restaurant. Photo taken 07/01/00.
The two juvenile raccoons in these photos were kept in the animal carrier while they were small and then were moved to an outdoor enclosure. On October 14, they began the their gradual release. This means that they were no longer in an enclosure, but were provided food. They eventually learned to hunt and forage completely on their own. Photo taken 08/06/00.
